Most of us regularly go to the dental office for a dental cleaning or teeth cleaning based on our dental professionals’ treatment recommendations. Some of us go in for a cleaning when we think we need one, or when our teeth feel like they could use a cleaning. However, did you ever give thought to why teeth cleanings are necessary and how often they should be done?
A dental cleaning is usually performed by a dental hygienist, but dentists may also provide this treatment as well. It involves the use of specialized dental instruments that are designed to remove plaque build-up from the surfaces of the teeth. The dental cleaning tools are also used to clean parts of the tooth that are covered by your gums that regular brushing and flossing cannot reach properly. A dental cleaning may also include a dental polish and fluoride treatment to whiten and strengthen your tooth if necessary.
Since no two people are alike, their dental needs can vary as well. While the standard recommendation is to go for a dental cleaning every six months, there are instances when a person may need to go more frequently. A history of dental decay, gum recession, and gum disease are just a few factors out of many factors that your dental professional will consider before they advise you on how often you should have your dental hygiene appointments.
As with many things in life, prevention is always the best option. By the time your dental professional detects a problem, the damage has already been done and may require more invasive treatment. However, if you regularly visit your dentist, your oral health can be monitored to look for potential issues before they become severe.
