What Is A Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that can replace one or more missing teeth. There are two parts of a dental bridge; the retainers and the pontic. The retainers are the teeth next to the space that will be part of the dental bridge. The pontic is the artificial tooth that will fill in the space. Most traditional dental bridges have two retainers for increased strength. However, there are dental bridges that have only one retainer, but they are not usually recommended due to less stability. The most common type of traditional dental bridge is called a three-unit bridge because it has one artificial tooth (dental crown), and two retainers.

What Is The Process?

In order for an artificial tooth (dental crown) to be placed in the space left by a missing tooth, it must be secured to the two surrounding teeth on the right and left side of the space.

First, the two retainer teeth located on opposite ends of the space are filed down using special dental tools so that the dental bridge can fit over them later. After they are filed down, a dental impression is taken of the retainer teeth to create a 3D model. The 3D model is then sent to a dental laboratory that specializes in creating custom-made dental bridges. Your dentist will provide special instructions to the dental laboratory regarding the size, shape, and colour of the dental bridge. Since it takes a few days for the dental laboratory to create the final dental bridge, a temporary dental bridge is usually placed the same day when the dental impression is taken.

Once the dental laboratory has completed the custom-made dental bridge, you will need to see your dentist again so that the temporary bridge can be removed, and the permanent bridge can be securely set in place.

It is vital to properly clean your dental bridge when cleaning the rest of your teeth and gums. Your dentist will provide you with a special cleaning tool to properly clean your dental bridge.
